Getting a Job With A Criminal Record

When you have a record, finding a job can feel almost impossible. You’re ready to work, but your past keeps showing up first. You might hear “no” more than “yes.” But don’t give up — there are real steps you can take to build a new life.

Why It’s Hard — But Not Impossible

Many people face roadblocks after coming home:

  • You may not have a lot of work experience.
  • Some employers say no right away if they see a record.
  • It’s tough when you don’t know people who can connect you to jobs.
  • Getting to work without a car or a driver’s license can be hard.

We understand. That’s why Chicagoland Prison Outreach is here — to help people just like you take the next step.

Real Tips to Help You Get a Job

  1. Be Honest — But Focus on Today
If an employer asks about your past, don’t lie. But don’t lead with your record either. Talk first about your skills, your goals, and how you’re working to stay on the right path. Let them see who you are today.
  2. Train for a Job That’s Open to You
Some jobs are harder to get with a record. But others — like carpentry, warehouse work, and food service — are more open. That’s why we train people in trades like carpentry that don’t need a state license.
  3. Get Help Writing a Resume
Even if you worked in prison (in the kitchen, laundry, or maintenance), that’s work experience. A good resume helps show employers what you can do. We help with that — and teach you how to talk about it in interviews.
  4. Your First Job Isn’t Your Last
The first job may not be your dream job. That’s okay. Use it to build a track record. Be on time. Work hard. Stay clean. That first “yes” opens the door to better jobs later.
  5. Ask for Support
You’re not meant to do this alone. Join programs like ours. Find a mentor. Let your family or church know you’re trying. Good people want to help you win — but you have to take the first step.
  6. Know What Employers Can Ask
Some companies ask about your record — but they still have to follow the law. In Illinois, many can’t ask until after an interview. That’s called “Ban the Box.” Learn your rights so you know what to expect.

You Matter. Your Future Matters.

Nobody can change the past, but every day, you get to write a new story. Don’t let shame stop you. Don’t let rejection wear you down. Keep going.

At CPO, we believe in second chances because we’ve seen lives transformed, including our own staff who’ve walked that same road.
