Growing up, Thomas experienced a household divided between a spiritual mother and a father who wasn’t, making it difficult as a child to discern good from evil. As he grew older, Thomas describes himself as running like Jonah from the truth, falling into a pattern of drinking, getting locked up, and using heavy drugs.
A Turning Point on the Bridge
In August of 2002, Thomas realized he had done a terrible thing. Overwhelmed, he stood on a bridge preparing to end his life. But in that dark moment, the Holy Spirit intervened, telling him, “Don’t do that. Do the right thing”. Obeying that voice, Thomas turned himself in.
Finding Growth and Brotherhood Behind Bars
When Thomas first entered prison, he didn’t trust anyone and felt constantly on edge. However, joining the Life Learning program shifted his path entirely.
As Thomas shares, Life Learning proved to be more than just a place for learning about God—it became a space to truly grow. The strong brotherhood within the program impacted him deeply, teaching him to love his fellow participants just as he loves his own family.
A Heart Restored
The change in Thomas’s heart has been profound. Reflecting on his transformation, Thomas admits: “I used to be a mean person, real mean, and I’m just humble now”. Today, his journey stands as a living testimony to how God’s grace can take a life marked by conflict and running, and transform it into one of humility, brotherhood, and lasting faith.
